Nelly Vasquez
Introduction
Nelly Vasquez is a traditional artisan in the Andean town of San Jerónimo. Address: Jr. Arequipa 479 San Jerónimo Peru
Meet Nelly

Nelly Vasquez has been making silver jewelry by hand for over forty-five years. The technique she uses, called “filigrana,” involves the heating and carefully bending of silver threads. This technique is unique to the Peruvian Andes and an important part of Vasquez´s heritage. “I was intrigued by the way the silver felt and how it moved under the fire.”

There are dangers to this work, which Vasquez learned early. At the age of twenty-seven, she inhaled the gas required for the heating, causing her to be terribly ill for 5 years. As she tells it, it was finally the local herbalists who cured her, when no doctors thought it possible. She went back to her work, but by the age of forty, she once again was forced to make sacrifices for her art, and this time the demands were region-wide. Sendero Luminoso, the Marxist-terrorist group which rose during the 1980s, took power in the Peruvian Andes, resulting in blood-shed between the terrorists and the government. “All the gringos left,” she says. “Anyone who visited us had to be interrogated by the police. No one was trusted. We had no choice but to stop our art and work in the mines.” For eleven years she was forced to work in the mines.

This bloody struggle for the identity of Peruvian people left no room for Vasquez´s crafts. However, it is this very struggle that brought her back, once again: “I am inspired by what silver-making meant to my ancestors and what it means for my country.”
